JCC Scholarships

The JCC provides multiple yearly scholarships to military dependents and spouses, veterans, and DoD workers on JBER for undergraduate, and continuing education.​​​

2024 Scholarship Winners

Congratulations to all of our scholarship winners. Thank you to everyone who submitted an application. We wish you all the best in furthering your education goals.

Purpose

The JBER Community Club (JCC) Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to deserving applicants to further their education at an accredited educational institution. The JCC awards these scholarships on the basis of community service, personal achievements, academic achievements, references, and a submitted essay. A scholarship award may be used only for the payment of tuition, books, course supplies, or school fees (to include room and board).

Scholarship Award Categories

Scholarships will be awarded in the following categories:
1. Individuals with less than 12 completed college credit hours

2. Individuals with 12 or more completed college credit hours

Eligibility

To be eligible, applicants must be a graduating high school senior or have a high school or equivalent diploma with plans to attend further education classes within the next school year. Applicant must be a family member possessing a valid military identification card who is the son/daughter/spouse of:

a. An Active-Duty Military Service Member who is assigned to Joint Base

    Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER).

b. An Active Guard or Reserve Component Service Member assigned to a unit on

    Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER).
c. A Department of the Army or Department of Defense civilian employed at Joint
    Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER).
d. A Retired Military Service Member residing in the Municipality of Anchorage
    or the Matanuska-Susitna Borough.
e. A dependent of a deceased military member.

Scholarship Committee Selection Process

Completed Application Packets are due by March 31 of each year.

The Scholarship Selection Committee determines the number of scholarships and their value in relation to funds available for disbursement. Each application packet will be reviewed by the Selection Committee. The committee is made up of committee members that are part of the JBER and education community. All of the components in the application packet are scored based on a numerical scale. Areas of assessment include:

  1. Weighted GPA

  2. Essay

  3. Reference Letters

  4. Activities, non-academic achievements, community service, and academic achievements

  5. 5 points will be awarded if the application is a member of the JBER Community Club or the spouse/son/daughter of a JCC member.

The committee reviews each application and awards scholarships anonymously. Scholarships will be awarded without regard to race, religion, sex, age, color, martial status, lawful political affiliation, labor organization membership, or physical handicaps. All decisions made by the Selection Committee are final.

Scholarship recipients will be notified of selection by the JCC Scholarship Chair by email no later than May 1. At this time the Scholarship Recipients will be required to complete a Scholarship Disbursement Form that must be returned to the JCC Scholarship Chair by May 15. 

If awarded, the students must show proof of military affiliation (in form of a Military ID card) and proof of enrollment at an institution of higher learning. The scholarship funds are awarded directly to the student after enrollment in a secondary education institution or trade school has been verified. Instructions on verification will be provided to the award recipients. The Scholarship Awards Ceremony will be held in May with further details released at a later date.

Scholarship Application Packet

Completed Application Packets are due by March 31 of each year.

The application has two parts:

1. The Online Application with your information as an applicant,

2. The Additional Required Documents (transcript(s), essay, and letters of recommendation. 

​

The following documents are required to be submitted to the JBER Community Club Scholarship Coordinator by EMAIL no later then March 31, 2024. Read each document's requirement carefully so they can be completed correctly. The scholarship application packet is not complete until the below listed documents are submitted and you have received confirmation from the JCC Scholarship Coordinator that the packet was received. An incomplete scholarship packet may not be considered by the Scholarship Selection Committee.

These additional documents must be emailed to the JCC Scholarship Coordinator at jberccscholarships@gmail.com.

Required Additional Documents​

Letters of Recommendation

Two letters of recommendation are required to be submitted from two separate individuals that are not related to the applicant. 

To the Applicant: The writer should be someone you trust, such as a college faculty member, a coach, a club advisor, or an employment/volunteer supervisor. 

To the Writer: Please be honest and realistic in your evaluation of the candidate. You should include comments on initiative, attitude, integrity, character, and academic achievement. Include any other information you feel pertinent. To ensure fairness in judging, we preserve the anonymity of the applicant during the selection process. **Therefore, please do not use the applicant's name in your narrative, instead use the word applicant. Your physical signature is required on the letter of recommendation.

Essay

Please submit a 1-2 page typed essay addressing the following topic:

DISCUSS A CURRENT ISSUE IN YOUR DESIRED FIELD OF STUDY AND WHAT SOLUTIONS WOULD YOU PROPSE TO ADDRESS IT?

Essays MUST be written solely by the applicant. The essay should be in black letters on white paper, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12 point font. 

Make sure your essay is clearly labeled, but does NOT contain your name.

Use of any AI writing applications such as ChatGPT or other similar programs is strictly forbidden. Applicants suspected or found to have used such programs will be disqualified.

Transcript

Submit your most recent transcript, either high school or college containing a GPA. If you have taken college courses as a high school student you will need to submit a copy of that transcript also, unless those courses appear on your high school transcript with dual enrollment.  Categories are based on completed college credit hours this year. â€‹
